Trends in digital printing - specialization and flexibility needed for success

In the last couple of years, digital inkjet printing has caught a new wave of printing with its single pass solutions coming to market! The new single pass doesn’t bring only speed with its new techniques but also more reliability and this puts it in a new environment of industrial printing.
The ceramic tile printing was the first major market to take benefit of this field. The next area for digital single pass was the textile printing industry.
However, digital is also taking its advantages such as corrugated cardboard printing in the packaging industry. Nowadays they can produce cardboard sheet printing at a speed of a sheet per second. Even in the area of container printing (yoghurt cups, plastic bottles, sleeves …), the digital direct printing solution seems to take over and bring more possibilities, as well as in glass printing.
Industrial printing is becoming more and more digital but this also means a shift from print as a product (like a poster) towards print as a process (just a part of a larger product, like a car). This will not replace the large format printing but will provide new opportunities for many suppliers and printers.

Process Standard Digital - establishing and implementing typical guidelines for a predictable print result

Globalization, new media and marketing trends define the need of a predictable print quality. Matching customer expectation with the printer commitment often shows that it is not enough for the print to be colourful, but rather to have the exact right colour. The focus of Fogra PSD lies in understanding and control of the entire workflow by providing typical industrial guidelines ranging from data creation all the way to printing and is primarily meant for print service providers and print buyers that are active in small and large format digital printing arena. Fogra PSD blends smoothly the appropriate knowledge base and tools with the interplay of important ISO, national and de-facto standards.

11:10 - 11:30 Discrepancy between standards and expectations in digital printing quality

Modern European and Croatian market are increasingly demanding quality of the product regardless of production price and technological possibilities. Digital printing is in a constant race in order to satisfy those expectations. However, set quality standards are not detailed enough, thus misunderstandings occur regularly between producers and buyers’ real expectations regarding quality.
These discrepancies can cause problems that often end in lawsuits, which unfortunately always lead to dissatisfaction of at least one of the parties. Defining product quality, even according to stricter elements of the standard, during initial contracting would reduce all of the above mentioned.

How to print the expected on backlit substrates - colour reproduction for light boxes and their different states

From more conventional based applications on backlit film or PVC to more demanding niche of stained glass decorative application, the challenge of printing the expected is appraised through color vividness and richness, strong contrast and dynamic range. Measuring such printing combination is not always effortless and sometime requires workarounds in order to obtain meaningful visual correlated measurement data. This tutorial aims at providing practical guidelines and tips for measuring, profiling and displaying such application on several types of substrates using various printing technologies and display conditions (light on/off, day/night viewing conditions).

Packaging industry has just started implementing this technology in order to be able to meet the market requirements regarding fast response time, provide short and medium print runs, where only digital technology allows yielding profit. But to what extent?
This technology has been used in labeling for a long time already, since requirements for Pantone colour print are milder than those in packaging industry. XEIKON 3500 is the first true professional digital printer for full B2 format, allowing for packaging and label printing.

Environment protection in printing industry

Not enough attention is paid to health and environmental protection. Processes in graphic industry today are surely more ecologically acceptable than before, and are being constantly improved through new ecological materials and processes that reduce negative effect on environment. Nevertheless, there are dangers and harmful effects that arise from the production process. Adoption of safety standards is a good way to rush safety application and awareness. It is important to know the exact products used in order to know how to handle specific materials and chemicals. Employee training, health control of employees working on digital presses, material safety data sheet, as well as protective equipment are the most important components security-wise. Waste management: sorting at source and disposal – is another security segment.
